Supporting Independent Living: Our Commitment to Aids and Adaptations
At Radcliffe Housing Society, we believe everyone should feel safe, supported, and independent in their home — regardless of age, disability, or health condition. That’s why we’ve set out a clear Aids and Adaptations Policy to help residents live confidently in homes that meet their evolving needs.
What Are Aids and Adaptations?
Aids and adaptations are physical changes or additions made to your home to help you live independently. These can range from simple fixes like handrails and lever taps, to more substantial adjustments like stairlifts or level-access showers.
Who Can Apply?
- Any of our residents living with a long-term illness, disability, or impairment can apply for an adaptation. While we don’t have a legal duty to provide these directly, we work closely with Local Authorities, Occupational Therapists, and partner organisations to make fair decisions and find the best outcomes.
- You may also be eligible for funding through a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) – something we can help guide you through.
- We do not provide adaptations for leaseholders or temporary residents, but you can still apply through your Local Council (with our permission).
Types of Adaptations
Minor Adaptations
- Grab rails, handrails, stair rails
- Easy-turn taps and accessible handles
- Flashing doorbells or visual fire alerts
Major Adaptations
- Stairlifts or through-floor lifts
- Level-access bathrooms and adapted kitchens
- External ramps and widened doorways
All major adaptations over £1,500 require a professional assessment and a referral from an Occupational Therapist.
Our Approach: Person-Centred and Practical
We’re not just ticking boxes. Every case is assessed individually, and we’ll explore different options – whether that’s installing an aid, considering a move to a more suitable property, or helping you access local support services. We’ll always be honest if an adaptation isn’t possible and work with you to find a reasonable alternative.
We also make sure all adaptations are recorded in our systems so that future allocations match residents to homes that meet their needs.
Making the Most of Our Adapted Homes
To protect the value of adapted properties:
- We may refuse mutual exchanges if the property doesn’t meet the incoming tenant’s needs.
- We may decline requests if the home is due for major works or decommissioning
We allocate a dedicated budget each year to support these services and promote independent living.

Looking Ahead
